Approaching The Finish Line
By Raul Gonzalez
As we reminisce on the accomplishments our GEAR UP students have displayed, it is important to understand that the most vital part of their high school career is forthcoming. While some students are continuing to take rigorous coursework through UTPA Concurrent Enrollment program, others are taking challenging courses at TSTC. Thus far, students are doing great and are taking advantage of the tremendous opportunity to take college classes during high school. Congratulations to all!
Community Services has also been truly displayed by the GEAR UP cohort. Students have
successfully helped raise more than $700 and over 200 toys for Toys for Tots. In addition, students
collaborated with Student Council to coordinate a Christmas food drive, which raised enough food to
donate over 20 food boxes for families in the community. Thanks to our dedicated student body, less
fortunate individuals from our community were able to receive helpful commodities.
Furthermore, all high school students and parents are invited to attend this year’s 2nd Annual
Student/Parent conference. Along with great presentations from different agencies, college representatives from different universities will be able to meet with those who are interested. Also, please be aware of the fast approaching THEA (February 22, 2010), ACT (April 10, 2010) and SAT (May 1, 2010) examinations. Notices to all parents and students will be distributed for tutorials two weeks prior to the examinations. In addition, résumé and application aid help will be available in the near future. Please let me know if can be of any assistance.
